We seek a senior person with more than 10 years of expertise in database and web services development in the Microsoft environment. Position is related to the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) (http://pan-starrs.ifa.hawaii.edu/public/) project. The Pan-STARRS Published Science Products Subsystem (PSPS) is expected to produce a science database in excess of 100 TB in size over the next 5 years. The primary duties and responsibilities of the job will be to design, develop and maintain software for the PSPS archive as a Scientific Software Engineer in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Astrophysical Sciences; design and develop schema and SQL scripts for the relational database management system (DBMS) hosting the archive data; develop applications and Web Services for the data retrieval layer; manage and establish an advanced archive design, based on highly scalable distributed architecture and cutting edge software and hardware technologies; assist in the support and maintenance of databases; work with the Center for Astrophysical Sciences Research Scientists, and publish technical papers on the software and services developed. Responsibilities will include supervision/guidance of junior programming staff and students, presentation of papers at conferences and publication of technical papers in refereed journals, and assistance in writing proposals to funding agencies. Requires knowledge of object oriented programming and design practices; experience in C/C++/Java programming; experience with both UNIX/LINUX and Windows operating systems; NET experience; C# knowledge a distinct advantage. Must have knowledge of current W3C standards, in particular XML Web services; be well versed in software engineering methodology and software development life cycle; possess excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; and proven ability to write software and other technical documentation. Incumbent must have experience and proficiency in relational DBMS and SQL technology. Microsoft SQL server experience and XML Web services (SOAP/XML and NET, MS Windows) experience are highly desirable. Experience working with astronomical data is also desirable. Expertise in medical informatics is a major plus, given our emerging collaborations with JHMI. A complete application will consist of a curriculum vitae and publication list.
